Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States of America it is formerly known as the Decoration Day . Memorial Day commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Fast forward May 30, 2011

What do we do on  Memorial Day is not the question , it is what we think of Memorial Day?
Many  people of different nationalities, colors and gender who live and work  in the United States of America citizen or not may have different views and opinions on how they spend Memorial Day  and majority of them don't even know the real meaning and reason why we are observing Memorial Day...... very sad!

Let me help you understand why most people treated Memorial Day as just a regular holiday by dividing the society into different groups and what they think of Memorial Day

First ,the labor group like majority of you and I the common working people most of us view Memorial Day as a day to relax and enjoy , hanging out with friends and family , and of course it is a long weekend millions of people are going out of town by land or by air

Second, the Businessmen, Enterpreneurs , Travel Agencies, just imagine how many millions of dollars Memorial Day will make people spend, barbecueing out in the park or in the patio or at the back of the house , people will flock to the malls and outlet stores anticipating for a big sale and discounted prices a huge discounts everywhere and to some with extra cash Memorial Day is the time to change new furnitures

Third, the students our future Leaders , Lawmakers , Nurses, Doctors, Scientists, the future of this very important nation what do they know about Memorial Day? Last Thursday I asked a high school student what does She know about Memorial Day and its significance? " I know for sure that we( referring to her family) will be flying to Vegas  and be back Monday night "was her response, I was dismayed by her answer but can I blame her for not knowing the significance of Memorial Day and one thing I am positive about is that hundreds of thousands if not millions of these students will flock to the moviehouses to watch their favorite movie (s), has anyone thought about educating, re-educating and reminding these students about the significance of Memorial Day?...maybe ? but how aggressive and dedicated are we to make sure that every single drop of blood of our soldiers alive or dead and their efforts to fight for this country will not be put in vain and forgotten

Third , the United States government yes my countrymen our government wants us to spend so that by Tuesday when all of us are back to work the financial sector of the US government will be grinning widely as figures in dollars on how much we spent  and splurged on Memorial Day skyrocketed

Let us not forget that we will not be here  where we are today if not for the bravery of our soldiers who fought for our country.....
